Virgin Mary Convent, also known as Zi-Ka-Wei Seng-Mou-Yeu, was originally built in 1843 in Hengtang Village of today’s Qingpu District, as proposed by the Jesuit missionary Luigi Maria Sica, and was relocated in 1864 to the Wangjiatang neiorhood in Xujiahui. In 1868, the Society of the Helpers of the Holy Souls and some other Catholic congregations of women moved to the area and built their monasteries around the Society of Jesus, thus forming a large monastery complex collectively referred to as Virgin Mary Convent.
The current building is the only remaining main part of the original complex, a five-story European-style building of reinforced concrete built in 1926, which was leased after the nuns moved to the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes in Pudong New Area at the end of the 20th century. It is now where Ye Olde Station Restaurant is located.
This building was listed in1994 by the Shanghai municipal government in as an Outstanding Historical Building in Shanghai, and in 2014 as a Cultural Heritage Site under Municipal Protection.
The current collections on display include “old Shanghai antiques” in the 1920s and 1930s, along with the two historically significant train carriages, one courtesy coach manufactured by German Hanover Train Manufacturer in 1899, which was for royal use by 0Empress Dowager Cixi, while the other was manufactured by Russian Yekaterinburg Coach Manufacturing Company, and once served for Madame Soong Ching-ling, the wife of Dr. Sun Yat-sen.
